Goals for Winter Break

I will be doing job and internship research in depth durning the break. However, I'm concerned about my ability to work over the winter break. I do not own a copy of Toonboom nor do I have the finances to purchase one. The free trial could work for a while but I read online there is a watermark. I'm staying until the school closes to continue to work and will be coming back early for the same reason. I do have Maya and Photoshop though so I can have all backgrounds perfect.

Animatic Version 1

Self Critique

Consistency in my hand-drawn has always been a challenge for me. This semester is really forcing me to strengthen this weakness. I am also very happy with my story and comfortable with the characters. This is really letting me focus on my timing and scene selection. I've never had the opportunity to get so much feed back and focus on pre-production. It's helping me get everything clear in my head before I animate the first scene.

Also My backgrounds will be a cell shaded 3D model.

Speech Self Critique

Finding a balance with the audience's attention was the hardest thing to do. Too much going on, like playing my demo reel and talk at the same time was too overwhelming. Where people are looking has to be singular and obvious. Staring at one thing to too long eyes get restless and distracted. A slideshow would have added a lot to the presentation as well. Stills of my home town, my first drawing and my mean uncle as I remember him growing up would have made a hug impact. The biggest problem I had was my ending. Going out with a bang makes a huge difference.

Artist Lecture Jackson Martin

Jackson Martin was very personable. I related well to him probably because he's younger. His art and presentation contained a lot of humor which made the entire experience more interesting. The first slide he presented was of him as a baby living on a hippie commune with his parents. His dad didn't have a shirt on and had a giant beard hanging down. Everyone in the crowd chuckled immediately.
He began as a performance artist and became a fine artist later, which I find strange. He also seemed to be constistant in his materials and subject matter. Most of his pieces contained living plants, glass, and mirrors. His funeral for the two way mirror I think is brilliant and hilarious. Great talk just in general.

Traveling Fellowship

I would like to travel to animation festivals in Spain to get expand my style and experience. Spain in particular is incredibly diverse. Influences range from unexpected magnificent mosques to the classic flamenco dancers. It's diversity makes it the most interesting and ideal destination.

Not only will the festival include works created from multiple countries but the location itself provides a physical example for a well rounded cultural experience.

Gadsby Creson

In my meeting with Gadsby she reviewed my resume and gave me a list of internships available through the school. A few of her suggestions include:
  • Use more bullet points
  • Don't use sentence structure
  • Focus on clarifying my summary
  • Be more specific in my objective
  • Use jargon
Gadsby also advised me to search for internships immediately. I will be meeting with her again soon.

The Hollywood Sell

Howard really emphasized the value of networking and performance as a tool. Whether it be pitching to a big wig studio or waiting tables, there is always a chance to make an impression. Also, the line between making an impression and making a fool of yourself is very clear to me now.
